Rookwood Weir

Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu)

Overview

Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu)

Completed in 2023, Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu) provides Central Queensland with an additional source of water for agriculture, urban, and industrial needs. The construction of the weir and surrounding enabling works created job opportunities for locals and sourced local goods where possible.

The water security provided by the weir allows for higher value crops to be grown in the region, including macadamias and citrus (mandarins) or other niche horticulture crops such as pecans and lychees.

Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu) is subject to a number of ongoing environmental conditions. These ensure the weir does not negatively impact the wildlife, vegetation and environment in the surrounding area.

The weir is the first of Sunwater’s assets subject to such stringent environmental requirements.

Did you know?

Rookwood Weir (Managibei Gamu) includes a specially designed passage to allow local turtles to travel up and downstream to breed, seek shelter and find food. The local turtle species include the vulnerable Fitzroy River Turtle and the critically endangered White Throated Snapping Turtle.

Known additional hazards

While things may appear calm on the surface, there can be submerged hazards which can cause serious injury.
Changes to water conditions can also cause dangerously shallow or deep water and exposed objects. There can be extremely strong currents and undertows even if the water looks calm.
