Burdekin Haughton Weirs & Barrages
History
Burdekin Haughton Weirs
Burdekin River irrigation was established in the 1950s over 7,500 ha at Clare, Millaroo and Dalbeg with water supply from the Gorge Weir and Blue Valley Weir.
In 1980, the Queensland Parliament established the Burdekin River Project, the largest land and water conservation scheme then undertaken in Queensland. Giru Weir was built in 1977, Clare Weir in 1978, and Val Bird Weir in 1983 to support irrigation water supplies for Burdekin farms producing the region’s famous high-yield cane, along with capsicums, eggplants, rockmelons, squash, pumpkins, watermelons and sweet corn, as well as summer mangoes.
